Chantilly Border Pattern

Squeeee! I'm so excited. The editors of PieceWork magazine have granted me permission to post the Chantilly Border pattern they featured on page 41 of their May/June 2009 issue.

They requested that I link back to PieceWork May/June 2009 issue as well as the web page with more information about purchasing Weldon’s Practical Needlework.

And they wanted you to know, Trish Faubion tatted the border for the magazine article using Presencia^® Fincrochet, size 10, in Ecru.

Here is the pattern posted in diagram form as well as in shorthand notation. All rights reserved. Not to be reprinted.

You should know, DH created this diagram from my hastily scrawled Post-it^® sketch. Adding the stitch counts was my job. They are incomplete, but I couldn't force my eyes to focus any longer and had to go to bed. Hubby's Photoshop skills are so much better than mine. I am begging for tips on how to diagram in Photoshop.

Dipping a Toe in the Design Pool

I made a quick Post-it^® sketch the other day of a stylized fleur de lis in the hopes of designing a tatted lace edging.

Awhile ago I joined the Design Tat group, but haven't kept up with the lessons. So I'm feeling like a fish out of water.

It will be fun to play around with Celtic tatting techniques, SCMRs, folded split rings or intertwining chains to see how or if they will bring the flow I'm looking for to the pattern repeats.

Mark Myers has a lovely fleur de lis edging on his web site. I would never presume to improve upon his work. I respect him and his designs too much. (Credit for the Fleur de Lis Heart, see right →)

It’s time for another Tatting Tea Tuesday!

Tatting hubris got the better of me this week. I imagined sitting down and working stitches quickly and effortlessly the first time through, regardless of the new techniques involved. (Go ahead. Laugh. I make these mistakes so you don’t have to.)

The false starts began with me not paying attention to which shuttle I was using. Then I jumped into the Self Closing Mock Ring (SCMR), forming the loop with knotting thread, not core thread. Sorry Shuttle Brothers! Your excellent instructions clearly state that it must be done with the core thread.

Following that I used the core thread shuttle to tat the center ring. Another big no-no. It only took me about an hour to painstakingly open up that center ring and pick out the stitches. I got lucky; the thread didn’t break and I was able to recover.

Tiny Round Teapot pattern is not difficult. I just kept making basic, careless mistakes. That said, I don’t have a finished teapot to scan in for you this week. But I have successfully mastered the SCMR.


It is time to step back and practice folded split rings before working the one in the teapot. So I’ve stopped for now at the folded split ring and switched to a set of practice shuttles.

It may not look like much, but the small snippet of lace above shows quite a bit of progress made this week.
