Motif #13 - Gloria Butterflies

Motif #13 Gloria Butterflies by Iris Niebach

Just look at these glorious butterflies tatted in size 40 Lizbeth Berry Burst. Such pretty little flutters!

The original edging pattern comes from Iris Niebach's book, Fantasia 3. It is aptly named Gloria.

(This motif is amended from Iris' original pattern.)

It measures 5.1 cm (2 inches) in diameter and is motif #13 in my 25 motif challenge.

See where I ran out of thread on the second butterfly's wing? I was using a thread sample and thought I had enough to finish. It was so close!

Five yards were loaded on one shuttle and about 3 on the other. Eleven centimters (4.3 inches) were left on one shuttle and 72.4 cm (28.5 inches) on the other.

This motif is destined to become a bookmark. Won't these two little flutters look precious flitting atop some late summer reading?

What's in a Name

I don't know if Iris Niebach names her patterns after loved ones, students, memorable local personalities or tatters who have gone before. But if I were Gloria, I would be delighted beyond words to be the namesake for this remarkable design.

To Cluny or Not to Cluny?
Apologies go to Ms. Niebach for changing the pattern. As written, it calls for Cluny leaves and a connecting chain above the Cluny leaves to be worked in between the butterflies.

You can see the original pattern on The Tattingplayer.

I tried to tat Clunies. I did.

My first attempt did not turn out well.

For starters, I wove the shuttle over and under six threads. That resulted in an even weave that didn't resemble a tallie at all. When it came time to close, I had no loom threads to pull through and got very confused. What else could I do but unweave the offending tallie all the way back to an empty loom.

Another thing I don't understand is the second, unflipped half-stitch at the start of the weaving. Is this a regular second half of a double stitch, unflipped? Or an unflipped second stitch made during the second half of split-ring tatting (which actually is the unflipped, first half stitch of regular tatting). I bet I am really over-thinking it, aren't I?

Anyway, after a much-needed visit to the online tatting class archives I have discovered my error in weaving around all six loom threads. Thank you to Georgia Seitz, Mimi Dillman, Tammy Rodgers and Wally Sosa for your excellent tutorials!

I have dipped my toe in the Cluny leaf pool and now must conquer this new technique or die trying.

Rest assured, once I get a good grasp of Clunies I will be making more of this butterfly edging pattern, exactly as Ms. Niebach intended. It's a keeper!

"Hope" is the Word

Ready for more Knot-Tea Fun?

Dedicated to All Tatters Everywhere
Lyrics adapted from:
Grease, "You're the One That I Want"

Hope © 2010 Sherry Pence

HOPE

I got Hope, it's multiplyin', and I'm losin' control.
Cause the power it's supplyin', is butterflyin'!

You better shape up, cause I need to tat, and my goal is set on you.
You better shape up, get your tools in hand, to my lace I must be true.

CHORUS

You're the one that I want, ooh ooh ooh, flutter
The one that I want , ooh ooh ooh, flutter
The one that I want (you are the one I want), ooh ooh ooh,
The one I need (the one I need), oh yes indeed (yes indeed)

25 Motif Challenge
Hope was tatted using size 40 Lizbeth threads, in black #604 and Falling Leaves #100. It will be counted as motif 10 in my 25 Motif Challenge.

Thank you, LadyShuttleMaker, for sharing this inspirational pattern. And more thanks to Tatskool, for all the beautiful butterflies she has been posting on her blog. And how could I forget Wanda (Wanda's Knotty Thoughts), Jeff Hamilton (Bridge City Tatting) and Cindy (A Happy Bluebird). Their Hope butterflies rock!!

Don't be surprised if a few more of these flutters fly off my shuttles in the days to come. They are quick, fun and keep me thinking of Spring.

Tatting Tea Tuesday
Now that you all have Knot-Tea song lyrics stuck in your heads, it's time to settle in for a nice Afternoon Tat.

And by that I mean a sneak peek from Heather, the Tarnished Tatter's forthcoming book!

Large Swan © 2010 Heather Johnston

I tatted this large swan in Lizbeth size 40 Black #604 with hematite seed beads. Sadly, at the time I wasn't aware that black swans have red beaks.

Must make another one and give her a proper red beak.

Also, I have a white swan to show but haven't gotten her scanned yet. Watch for the white swan to be added later today.

Thank you, Heather, for granting me permission to post photos in advance of the book's publication date.

Wishing you all blissful me time to create something beautiful.

See you next Tuesday for more communi-tea!

Farewell February & So Long Setbacks

Bye-bye blustery blizzards! Hello March with your lion-like moods. Roar in so April arrives like a lamb for International Tatting Day (April 1) and Easter (April 4).

Out, Out Bad Tats
The tatting has been a struggle these past few days. Rings won't close, badly tatted-over ends pull out and so on. This slump has had a carpet-bombing effect on my mood which bleeds over into everything else.

Take my latest craft store outting, for example. I thought I brought home a new spool of that wonderful Signature quilter's 100% cotton thread (Egyptian long staple cotton in size 20) in a color combo called Mallard.

Mallard (M45) has lovely teal, purple, tan and ivory shades. I tatted a ring and the thread stretched and broke almost immediately upon closing. It turned out to be decorative spun polyester in size 30. Not at all what I thought I bought. To make matters worse, "size 30" is the equivalent to tatting cotton size 80.

Potty training tantrums from the Sprout are also causing frayed nerves (not to mention extra laundry) at Silly Hat Central. Sprout's negotiating skills have leaped forward and we must be smarter parents to stay a step ahead. Part of me is really proud and part is terrified.

On a brighter note, the fortune in my after-meal cookie said this: A truly creative person rids him or herself of all self-imposed limitations.

Sayonara, slump! I'm tossing you out with the February trash. Need to make room for true creativity.

This coming week I will be watching closely for Postie to bring any of these tantalizing goodies:
  • 2 Pop-a-Bobbin shuttles from Jane Eborall -- one in Sycamore and one in Walnut.
  • 1 Tatting booklet - Elgiva Nicholls, Tatter: Life and Career 1900 —1982
  • 2 Butterfly Pattern books from LadyShuttleMaker, plus two skeins of HDT in size 50 Treebeard
  • Possibly, just maybe, a little envelope from Tatskool
This tatting treasure trove certainly adds a rosier glow.
